President of the United States of America, Donald Trump announced that in a few weeks to come, he expects to meet the Presidents of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo to sign the final agreement.
Donald Trump announced this on Wednesday, 9th July in the “White House” where he welcomed some of the leaders of countries in Africa including Liberia, Guinea Bissau, Senegal, Mauritania and Gabon.
He said “In a couple of weeks to come, Both Leaders of Rwanda and DRC will come to sign the final agreement.
President Kagame and Tshisekedi lastly met in Doha, Qatar, on 28 March, during a meeting facilitated by His Highness, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad AI Thani. The purpose of this meeting was to rebuild trust so as to lay the foundation for conversations aimed at finding solutions for the ongoing issues. It was followed by conversations between the Government of DRC and the M23/AFC coalition.
Trump stated that insecurity issues in the Great Lakes region have lasted for over 30 years now and it has worsened over time. He noted that the war in Eastern DRC is considered by some to be the dangerous war after World War II. However, he gave hope that this war is about to end after these agreements.
Trump mentioned that leaders of both countries are going to meet again two weeks after the governments of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo signed a peace agreement. This agreement was signed in Washington, D.C, on June 27 by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe and Therese Kayikwamba Wagner.
When the Foreign Ministers of both countries signed the agreement, they were also received by President Trump, who described it as historic and a major step toward bringing peace to the region shared by the two countries. He emphasized that this peace is essential for enabling trade cooperation with the United States and for ending the war in Eastern DRC.
He stated: “Today, the war has ended for good, and the entire region has entered a new journey of hope, unity, and peace.”
President Paul Kagame, in a press conference held on July 4, 2025, said that President Trump’s administration addressed the issue from its roots. In seeking a solution, the U.S. focused on three key pillars: political, security, and economic matters while others ignored these core causes and instead looked for solutions in the wrong places, such as imposing sanctions on Rwanda or the M23.
The Head of State added that this peace agreement, signed between Rwanda and the DRC with the support of the United States, is a chance to bring lasting peace and security to eastern Congo. However, he noted that success will depend on how both countries implement the agreement. He affirmed that Rwanda is fully committed to honoring all the commitments it made.
