The United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Lammy, announced that he had spoken with President Paul Kagame and commended the progress being made in resolving the ongoing issues in Eastern DRC.
It has been nearly two weeks since the governments of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo signed a peace agreement aimed at finding a lasting solution to the longstanding problems in Eastern DRC.
On the night of Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that the agreement signed between Rwanda and DRC is one of the promising steps toward restoring peace and stability in the region shared by the two countries.
In a message posted on X, David Lammy said: “The peace agreement between Rwanda and DRC, and the ongoing talks between M23 and DRC in Qatar, offer a chance for lasting peace and stability in the region.”
He went on to say: “I I spoke to Paul Kagame to welcome progress and emphasise the need for implementation by all parties.”
Back in February 2025, David Lammy visited Rwanda, where he was received by President Paul Kagame at his office. Their discussions also touched on the issues in Eastern DRC.
At that time, President Kagame told the UK’s Head diplomat that Rwanda is committed to finding a solution to the crisis, but that Rwanda’s security must also be prioritised and valued.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, also addressed the agreement on Wednesday, while hosting some European leaders. He referred to the agreement signed in Washington DC between Rwanda and DRC, saying it was a move to end the war and crises that have lasted for 30 years in the Great Lakes region.
Trump also stated that in the coming weeks, he plans to host the Presidents of Rwanda and DRC so they can sign the final agreement, which will reaffirm the one recently signed by their Foreign Ministers.
