In a landmark move aimed at strengthening international cooperation, Rwanda and Turkmenistan have officially established diplomatic relations. The signing ceremony took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where Rwanda’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Martin Ngoga, and his Turkmen counterpart, Ambassador Aksoltan Ataeva, signed a Joint Communiqué formalizing the relationship.
This historic agreement marks the first time Rwanda and Turkmenistan have entered into official diplomatic ties. The two nations committed to working together on global issues of mutual concern and pledged to deepen collaboration within the framework of the United Nations.
Ambassador Ngoga highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, “This step reflects Rwanda’s continued efforts to build meaningful partnerships across the world, especially with fellow developing nations. We believe in mutual respect and shared opportunities.”
Ambassador Ataeva also welcomed the new chapter of cooperation, expressing optimism about future engagements, particularly in multilateral forums.
The newly forged relationship is expected to open doors for collaboration in areas such as sustainable development, trade, and regional connectivity, especially with a shared focus on landlocked developing countries (LLDCs). Both Rwanda and Turkmenistan are active members of this group.
A key opportunity for collaboration is the upcoming Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, scheduled to take place in Awaza, Turkmenistan. The event will provide a platform for both nations to align efforts on addressing the specific challenges faced by landlocked economies and explore joint solutions.
This diplomatic breakthrough adds to Rwanda’s growing global presence and is a step forward in building new alliances that support economic growth, peace, and sustainable development.
