The President of the Republic, Paul Kagame, said that the fighting that has been taking place in parts of South Kivu in the DRC began even before he and his counterpart, President Felix Tshisekedi, signed the Washington D.C. agreements; therefore, no one should claim that these agreements were violated
In a powerful and heartfelt address, His Excellency delivered a speech that reminded Rwandans and the world, of the country’s unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and responsible leadership. Speaking to candidates and appointed officials, he opened by warmly welcoming all who had signed on to serve the nation, emphasizing that leadership is not merely a position but a responsibility carried on behalf of every Rwandan.
His Excellency stressed that leaders must always understand the weight of their roles. He reminded them that the decisions they make and the duties they carry out must be rooted in service, humility, and the greater good of the country. This call to responsible leadership was not just a reminder, it was a reaffirmation of Rwanda’s values and its vision for the future.
A significant portion of his speech focused on Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to maintain peace, both within its borders and with neighboring countries. His Excellency highlighted that Rwanda’s goal has always been clear: to live peacefully with everyone. This message came at a crucial time, especially as the nation continues to navigate complex regional politics and security challenges.
Addressing the recently signed accords in Washington, His Excellency underscored the importance of respecting agreements, not selectively, but fully and mutually. He reminded leaders that Rwanda must honor the commitments it made, just as other involved parties are expected to do. These agreements, he said, form a foundation upon which peace can be built, but only if all signatories show genuine willingness to follow through.
He also brought clarity to a misunderstanding often pushed by critics. Long before his visit to the United States and before the signing of the accords, fighting had already been taking place in the region. He made it clear that Rwanda had adhered to previous agreements, even when the other side did not. This fact, he noted, remains undeniable despite efforts by some to distort the truth.
His Excellency spoke firmly about the hostility Rwanda continues to face. He acknowledged the long history of accusations, hatred, and misinformation aimed at undermining the country. Among these were even shocking statements from external figures threatening Rwanda’s very existence, claims that Rwanda could somehow be removed from the world. Responding to this with calm defiance, he questioned how those who did not create the world could claim the power to erase a nation from it. His words were a reminder of Rwanda’s resilience and its refusal to be intimidated.
Despite these challenges, His Excellency’s message remained one of hope and forward movement. He urged Rwandans to stay united, stay committed to peace, and continue striving for stability, no matter the obstacles. As he concluded, he extended warm wishes for a peaceful end to the year and a hopeful beginning to 2026, a year he believes can usher in renewed harmony and progress.
His speech not only reinforced Rwanda’s dedication to peace but also served as a strong declaration of sovereignty, dignity, and truth. It reminded every listener that Rwanda’s future will be shaped not by external hostility but by the strength, unity, and determination of its people.
