Rwanda has announced that it supports the statements issued by the African Union (AU) and the East African Community (EAC), which affirmed that Somalia must remain a single, unified country. This follows claims by some parties recognizing Somalia’s Somaliland region as an independent state.
This comes after Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, a move that sparked debate and led some to speculate that other countries might follow the same path.
However, these actions were strongly condemned by organizations including the African Union, which issued a statement saying that “The Chairperson of the African Union Commission rejects any recognition of Somaliland and reaffirms the Africa Union’s unwavering commitment to the unity and sovereignty of Somalia.”
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission further stated that he rejects any plans or actions aimed at recognizing Somaliland as an independent country, reminding that “Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.”
The East African Community, which recently admitted Somalia as its newest member state officially approved in March last year also condemned the recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
In a statement released by the EAC on Sunday, December 28, 2025, the organization said that it “recognizes the Federal Republic of Somalia as a single sovereign state under the authority of the Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia.”
The Government of Rwanda also issued a statement on Sunday, saying that “Rwanda fully aligns with the statements issued by the African Union and the East African Community in support of Somalia.”
The Government of Rwanda further called on the international community to follow paths that promote peace and prosperity, in accordance with international law.
