The Government of the United States has announced that it hosted talks bringing together members of the Joint Oversight Committee between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), responsible for monitoring the implementation of the peace agreement signed in June 2025. Both countries once again agreed to intensify efforts to ease tensions.
This was announced by Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to President Trump on African Affairs, in a statement released early on Friday, April 24, 2026.
Boulos stated: “The State Department hosted a productive meeting with our partners on the Joint Oversight Committee to review progress on the DRC-Rwanda Peace Agreement signed last June.”
He added: “Both the DRC and Rwanda reaffirmed their commitment to de-escalation and continued implementation of the Peace Agreement, building on progress from our March meetings in Washington.”
The Senior Advisor also took the opportunity to thank the African Union, the Republic of Togo, and the State of Qatar for their continued contribution to mediation efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in the Great Lakes region.
On March 17 and 18, similar talks had taken place in Washington between delegations from the Government of Rwanda and that of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where both sides agreed on concrete steps toward implementing the Washington Peace Agreement.
During those discussions, Rwanda and the DRC also agreed on a series of coordinated actions aimed at reducing tensions.
Among the agreed measures are: a shared commitment to respect and uphold each country’s sovereignty and security, establishing a timeline for the withdrawal of military activities and defensive measures put in place by Rwanda.
Also, they agreed that to DRC committing to take decisive and timely action to dismantle the FDLR armed group and to also ensure the protection of all civilians without discrimination.
