President Paul Kagame has praised France for the positive steps it has taken towards a new direction in its relationship with Rwanda, which led both countries to commit to looking forward rather than holding onto the past, and said those choices have now borne promising results.
The Rwandan Head of State made these remarks in Paris, France, where he and First Lady Jeannette Kagame were hosted for dinner by French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron.
The event took place at the French Presidential Palace (Palais de l’Élysée), following the official opening of a memorial called ‘Les Archives’ which will document the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
During the dinner, President Paul Kagame reflected on the progress made since France took a significant step in acknowledging its role in the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi and issuing an apology.
President Kagame said: “Rwanda appreciates the steps you have taken. We have chosen to look forward, and write a new chapter together, and that choice is already bearing fruit.”
He also said that both countries continue to show willingness to work well together, adding: “But what matters most is the renewal of trust.”
The Rwandan Head of State said that France is one of Rwanda’s most important partners across various sectors that are central to the country’s wellbeing and development.
He said: “Today, France is an important partner for Rwanda, in investment, technology, climate, and many other common priorities.”
The Rwandan Head of State assured France that Rwanda will continue to do everything possible to advance cooperation and shared opportunities between the two countries.
