Top African Leaders Head to Kigali for Inaugural Mindset Reset Forum

Rwanda will host nearly 1,000 leaders and thinkers at the inaugural Africa Mindset Reset Forum, scheduled for August 25–26 at the Kigali Convention Centre. The forum will be attended by heads of state, including Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, as well as former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Organised by the African School of Governance (ASG), the forum will examine how Africa can strengthen governance, institutions and implementation while advancing economic self-reliance. Young people and emerging leaders are expected to account for 80 per cent of participants.

Those attending will include President Paul Kagame, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, former South African President Thabo Mbeki, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.

Former Gambian Vice President Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang and former Namibian First Lady Monica Geingos are also expected.

Under the theme “From Pan-Africanism to Meta-Africanism,” discussions will focus on transforming the unity that supported Africa’s liberation from colonial rule into practical cooperation capable of delivering economic development.

Mbeki will give the opening keynote address, while Kagame, Mahama and Desalegn will discuss how Pan-African ambitions can be converted into concrete action.

ASG President Francis Gatare said Pan-Africanism helped African countries attain political independence, but the continent now requires a different approach to secure economic freedom.

“Africa now needs a new mindset to achieve economic independence,” Gatare said.

The forum will promote seven mindset shifts, including moving from dependency to initiative, pessimism to growth and mediocrity to excellence.
