I&M Bank Rwanda’s First-Half Net Profit Rises 62% to Rwf18.8 Billion

I&M Bank Rwanda recorded Rwf18.8 billion in profit after tax during the first half of 2026, representing a 62 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2025. The bank attributed the growth to higher income, an expanding loan portfolio and increased customer deposits.

Its financial results for the six months ended June 30, released on August 24, show that the bank continued expanding its operations while investing in technology, cybersecurity, employee development, customer service and wider access to its services.

Net operating income rose by 40 per cent to Rwf49.1 billion, while net interest income increased by 31 per cent. The bank linked the improvement to growth in loans and customer deposits, together with effective balance-sheet management. Loans and advances to customers increased by 31 per cent from the beginning of the year to Rwf638.4 billion.

I&M Bank Rwanda said the expansion was driven largely by increased demand from customers, particularly businesses and sectors involved in productive economic activities.

Customer deposits grew by 25 per cent, strengthening the bank’s capacity to extend more credit. Its total assets also increased by 23 per cent to more than Rwf1.3 trillion.

The bank recorded the growth while continuing to invest in technology, cybersecurity, staff development, customer-service improvements and additional service-delivery channels. These investments contributed to a 22 per cent increase in operating expenses.

During the first six months of the year, I&M Bank Rwanda opened new branches in Rubavu and Gisozi and introduced agent banking to make financial services more accessible. It also continued developing its online banking services through the “Tsinda na Banki Muhorana” campaign.

The bank further introduced eKash, which allows customers to transfer amounts below Rwf10 million instantly between banks operating in Rwanda, MTN MoMo and Airtel Money.

I&M Bank Rwanda Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Mutimura said the bank had registered strong performance across several areas, including profitability, lending, customer deposits and total assets. “Looking ahead, our goal is to build on Rwanda’s continuing economic transformation and turn it into sustainable opportunities for our customers and the bank.”

Mutimura said the bank would continue using its resources efficiently, expanding into growing sectors and developing more digital financial solutions.

I&M Bank Rwanda was Established in 1963, it is a subsidiary of I&M Group PLC, a financial-services group operating in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and working with CIEL Group in Mauritius.
