Getting older is something we all hope to experience, but living to an old age is not the only goal. We also want to reach our 60s, 70s and beyond while still being strong, active and healthy.
The food we eat can play an important role in helping us get there. While no food can guarantee a long and healthy life, eating well over many years can lower the risk of some health problems and help the body stay stronger.
So, what should you eat if you want to take better care of your health as you grow older?
Start with more fruits and vegetables. They provide vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that the body needs. Foods such as bananas, oranges, mangoes, tomatoes, carrots, spinach, cabbage and other vegetables can easily be added to everyday meals.
Whole foods are also important. Instead of eating too many highly processed foods, choose foods that are closer to their natural form. Beans, peas, sweet potatoes, potatoes, whole grains, fruits and vegetables are simple foods that can provide the body with useful nutrients and energy.
Protein is another important part of a healthy diet. Foods such as eggs, beans, fish, chicken, milk and other protein-rich foods help support muscles. This becomes especially important as we get older because maintaining strong muscles can help us stay active and independent.
Healthy fats should also be part of our meals. Avocados, nuts, seeds and some types of fish contain fats that can support overall health. The key is to enjoy them in reasonable amounts.
At the same time, it is important to limit foods that can cause problems when eaten too often. Too much sugary food, highly processed food, excess salt and unhealthy fats can increase the risk of health problems over time.
Water also matters. Staying hydrated helps the body perform many important functions. Instead of always reaching for sugary drinks, make water your main drink throughout the day.
Eating healthy does not mean you can never enjoy your favorite foods. It is about what you eat most of the time. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, enough sleep and regular health check-ups can all contribute to healthier ageing.
You cannot control everything about how you will feel at 70. However, the choices you make today can help your future self. Taking care of your body does not have to begin when you become old. It can begin with your next meal.
