President Paul Kagame met President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo on the sidelines of the International Space Summit in Paris, where the two leaders reaffirmed the strong and longstanding bilateral relations between Rwanda and the Republic of Congo.
During their meeting, the two Heads of State exchanged views on shared priorities and stressed the need to advance effective, sustainable and African-led solutions to challenges facing the continent.
The talks build on years of cooperation between Rwanda and the Republic of Congo, with the two countries maintaining partnerships in areas including trade, investment, economic development and regional integration.
President Kagame and President Sassou Nguesso have previously underscored the need to translate their countries’ close political relations into stronger economic cooperation that delivers tangible benefits to their citizens.
During Kagame’s State Visit to the Republic of Congo in April 2022, the two countries signed cooperation agreements covering investment, mining, small and medium-sized enterprises, culture and the arts, as well as youth, sports and civic education.
Their partnership was further strengthened during President Sassou Nguesso’s State Visit to Rwanda in July 2023, when the two leaders witnessed the signing of an agreement aimed at accelerating implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area between Rwanda and the Republic of Congo.
At the time, the two countries also expressed their commitment to strengthening political, economic and social cooperation while accelerating the implementation of agreements and joint economic projects.
The latest meeting in Paris therefore continues a series of high-level engagements between Kagame and Sassou Nguesso aimed at deepening bilateral ties while promoting greater African cooperation in addressing the continent’s development and other shared challenges.
