Rwanda’s Industrial Output Rose 6.8% Year on Year

Rwanda’s industrial output grew by 6.8% year on year as several areas of industrial activity recorded higher production, according to the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda.

The increase was recorded in August 2026 compared with the same month a year earlier, according to NISR’s latest Index of Industrial Production report.

Mining and quarrying recorded the strongest increase, with output rising by 26%.

Electricity production increased by 17.6%, while water supply and waste management activities grew by 10.5%. Manufacturing output rose by 4.8%.

Within manufacturing, food processing increased by 7%, while production of non-metallic materials including glass, cement and tiles grew by 10.4%.

Production of metal products, machinery and other equipment increased by 10.8%, while wood, paper and printing activities rose by 7.3%.

Beverage and tobacco production was among the areas that declined, falling by 3.2% compared with August 2025.

The figures came as Rwanda continued efforts to expand domestic manufacturing and increase local production.

Recent additions to the sector include a steel manufacturing plant expected to produce about 250,000 tonnes annually, mainly supplying materials used in construction.

Industry has also remained an important part of Rwanda’s wider economic growth. NISR figures for the first quarter of 2026 showed that the sector accounted for 24% of gross domestic product and grew by 13%.
