Rwanda’s National Identification Agency (NIDA) temporarily suspended the exercise of taking photographs of citizens seeking the country’s digital identity card, without giving a reason for the decision.
People who have not yet been photographed for the digital ID will have to wait for a new schedule, which NIDA said would be communicated in the coming days.
In a statement signed by NIDA Director General Josephine Mukesha, the agency announced that the photography exercise had been temporarily halted.
“The management of the National Identification Agency (NIDA) informs people who have not yet been photographed to receive the Digital Identity Card (e-ID) that the photography exercise has been temporarily suspended,” the statement said.
NIDA said the new schedule and the sectors where the photography exercise will take place will be communicated once the programme resumes.
The agency also encouraged people who need to correct information in their personal records to do so before the photography exercise resumes.
The information includes names, parents’ names, place of birth, age, marital status and other personal details.
“We encourage those who need to correct their personal information, including their names, parents’ names, place of birth, age, marital status and other details, to approach civil registration officers in the sectors where they live before the photography exercise resumes,” NIDA said.
NIDA clarified that pre-enrollment, which involves submitting and confirming information required for the digital ID, is continuing despite the temporary suspension of the photography exercise.
Citizens can still complete the pre-enrollment process through Irembo while waiting for the photography exercise to resume.
NIDA asked the public to continue following official announcements for information on the new schedule and the locations where the photography exercise will be conducted.
