US President Donald Trump said the United States would not launch another attack on Iran before the midterm elections, while describing ongoing discussions with Tehran as productive.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, saying Washington remained in contact with Iran despite continuing tensions between the two countries.
“We are having productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Trump said.
He said the United States would not attack Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, but did not indicate whether military action would remain off the table after the vote.
Trump also said the US blockade would remain in force and repeated his position that Iran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
The announcement came as Washington and Tehran continued exchanging proposals aimed at ending the conflict and addressing restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global energy shipments.
The war and disruptions to oil supplies have also become issues in the US election campaign, with higher energy prices adding pressure ahead of the congressional vote.
Economic pressure on Tehran has continued alongside the diplomatic contacts. The US Treasury announced new sanctions targeting vessels and companies it accused of helping Iran move petroleum and petrochemical products through networks used to evade restrictions.
Trump’s statement therefore paused the prospect of another US attack before the elections while leaving open what Washington could do once the vote has passed.
