What Causes Dry Lips and How to Prevent Them

Dry lips are a common problem that many people consider minor. However, they can cause discomfort, burning, peeling, cracking, and bleeding. In some cases, dry lips may develop small sores or become very painful, especially when eating acidic foods such as lemons, salty foods, or spicy dishes.

One of the common causes of dry lips is not drinking enough water. However, dehydration is not the only reason. Exposure to sunlight, cold weather, heat, and low humidity can also cause the lips to lose moisture. Other possible causes include vitamin B or iron deficiencies, certain medications, allergic reactions, and thyroid problems.

Although dry lips are usually not a serious health concern, they can sometimes be linked to skin conditions, infections, or reactions to products that come into contact with the lips.

Frequently licking the lips can also make the problem worse. When saliva dries, it removes moisture from the lips, leaving them even drier than before. This can create a cycle in which a person repeatedly licks their lips to relieve the dryness, only for the problem to return.

Children and teenagers who frequently lick their lips may also develop a rash or small bumps around the mouth.

To prevent dry lips, people are advised to drink enough water throughout the day and use lip balms that do not contain added fragrances or flavoring ingredients. It is also important to avoid licking, biting, or peeling off dry skin from the lips, as this can cause further irritation and bleeding.

Products containing petroleum jelly, glycerin, ceramides, or dimethicone can help keep moisture in the lips and protect them from further dryness. When going outdoors, using a lip balm with sun protection can also help protect the lips from damage caused by ultraviolet rays.

People should pay attention to persistent symptoms. If the lips continue to crack, bleed, or cause significant pain, or if they do not improve after a few weeks of proper care, it is important to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can help identify the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
