The Cabinet has approved the establishment of the National Artificial Intelligence Agency, which is expected to advance AI development and its use in the country, with a focus on transforming government operations.
This was the fourth resolution of the Cabinet meeting held on Monday, June 8, 2026, chaired by President Paul Kagame, which outlined the policies, strategies and programs approved by the Cabinet, including the establishment of the National AI Agency.
Following the announcement of the Cabinet resolutions, the Office of the Prime Minister shared key information about these decisions, including the establishment of the agency and what it will be responsible for.
The Government of Rwanda says the establishment of the National Artificial Intelligence Agency aims to continue advancing AI and its use in the country.
It also outlined key things the public should know about the agency, stating that it “will oversee AI deployment in Rwanda and beyond, focusing on government transformation, research, AI skilling, ethics, industry growth, commercialization and global engagement”
The agency will also be responsible for building people’s knowledge in AI, overseeing the ethics of its use, advancing industry, commercialization and international partnerships.
The Government also says the agency; “will centralize its AI efforts to ensure efficient implementation, coordination, attraction of talent, investment, and advanced technology on the continent.”
Rwanda has already begun a journey of using Artificial Intelligence in various sectors, particularly in healthcare, where in February 2026 an AI-powered application was launched.
This application is expected to assist healthcare workers in examining patients and making treatment decisions. It is part of a project called Horizon 1000, a partnership between the Government of Rwanda, the Bill Foundation and OpenAI, which aims to reach 1,000 health facilities across Africa by 2028.
The application supports a doctor or nurse during patient examinations by listening and analyzing what the patient presents, helping the doctor make a treatment decision.
