The AFC/M23 coalition, has urged the DRC authorities to cease intensified military attacks. It also accused the Burundian army of deploying over 500 troops, warning that such actions will not go unanswered.
This was stated by the spokesperson of AFC/M23, Lawrence Kanyuka, on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in a video message intended to inform both Congolese citizens and the international community.
He said: “We wish to inform you that even though we continue to show willingness for dialogue aimed at finding a political solution to the problems in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Kinshasa government continues to launch attacks, ignoring the peace talks in Doha.”
Kanyuka added that beyond the attacks from the government forces, the Congolese side has been sending large numbers of troops and weapons into several areas, including Walikare and Lubero.
He also mentioned that forces allied with the Congolese government, particularly Burundian soldiers, have been deployed in increasing numbers and have been attacking AFC/M23 positions over the past week.
He stated that the Burundian army had deployed a battalion of 520 soldiers in the Shabunda area, who are now heading towards Bukavu and are heavily armed.
He reassured Congolese citizens by saying: “The AFC/M23 coalition is committed and strong enough to protect civilian populations and repel any attacks launched against it. We will not allow ourselves to be intimidated or permit ongoing lawless, bloody actions by a regime that has traded peace for its selfish interests.”
These actions by the Congolese government have intensified, especially following its recent signing of a peace agreement with Rwanda and the ongoing dialogue between the government and the AFC/M23 coalition taking place in Doha, Qatar
