In a significant step towards deepening bilateral ties and strengthening continental security collaboration, the Republic of Rwanda and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation.

The historic signing ceremony took place in the Algerian capital, Algiers, where Rwanda’s Minister of Defence, Juvenal Marizamunda, led a high-level delegation and was received with honour by Army General Saïd CHANEGRIHA, Algeria’s Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army.

This agreement marks a pivotal moment in the evolving partnership between the two nations, setting a strong foundation for sustainable and mutually beneficial military cooperation. It embodies a shared commitment to African solidarity, strategic independence, and peace on the continent.

The MoU outlines key areas of collaboration, including:

  • Strategic planning and training
  • Capacity-building and defence technology
  • Defence industries and acquisition of military equipment
  • Intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism efforts
  • Joint military exercises and operations

Officials on both sides hailed the agreement as a progressive move toward strengthening African-led security solutions and enhancing resilience against regional threats. The deal is expected to open doors to increased knowledge-sharing, technological exchange, and operational readiness between the defence institutions of Rwanda and Algeria.

Speaking at the ceremony, both parties emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in securing peace and stability on the continent. The partnership is seen as a reflection of a broader shift towards intra-African defence alliances that prioritize local solutions and homegrown strategies.

This MoU comes at a time when African nations are increasingly recognizing the value of collaboration in tackling shared security challenges, from terrorism and cyber threats to peacekeeping and capacity development.

With this agreement, Rwanda and Algeria reaffirm their commitment to fostering a peaceful and self-reliant Africa, rooted in mutual respect and a shared vision for continental progress.
