The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has announced that one of its small unmanned aircraft (a drone), which was being used in training, lost its route due to bad weather and crashed in Rutsiro District, injuring three children who were returning home from school.
This was contained in a statement released by the RDF on the night of Tuesday, September 16, 2025, indicating that the accident occurred during the afternoon hours.
It read: “This afternoon, at 13:40 hours, a small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operated as part of Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) training exercise was diverted due to adverse weather conditions and subsequently crashed in Rutsiro District. The incident resulted in injuries to three students who were returning home from school. Two of them students are currently receiving medical treatment in Kivumu Health Centre, while the third one was transferred to Murunda Hospital for further care.”
The Rwanda Defence Force leadership expressed its sympathy to the families of the injured children and also announced that it deeply regrets the distress this incident has caused.
The statement continued: “The RDF is also working closely with local authorities and medical personnel to ensure that the affected children receive the best possible care.”
The RDF leadership further announced that it is providing all necessary support to the injured children and their families.
