How to network when you’re shy, introverted, or overthinking

Networking can feel scary when you’re shy, introverted, or someone who overthinks everything. You may worry about saying the wrong thing, being judged, or not knowing how to start a conversation. But the truth is, networking does not always mean talking to big crowds or being extremely social. It’s about making small, meaningful connections. Here are simple tips to help you network with confidence, even if you’re not naturally outgoing.

1. Start with One-on-One Conversations

You don’t need to speak to many people at once. Begin with just one person. It’s easier to talk when there are no groups watching. A simple greeting like, “Hi, I’m (your name), how are you finding the event?” can open a conversation naturally.

2. Prepare Beforehand

Overthinking often comes from not knowing what to say. Before going to an event, prepare a few basic questions or topics. For example:

  • “What do you do?”
  • “How did you get into your field?”
  • “What do you like most about your job?”
These questions are easy to ask and help the conversation flow.

3. Use Your Listening Skills

Introverted and shy people are often great listeners, and that’s a strength in networking. You don’t need to talk too much. Let the other person speak, show interest, and ask follow-up questions. People appreciate someone who listens.

4. Start Small and Build Slowly

You don’t have to attend big conferences right away. Begin with smaller groups, online communities, or casual meetups. Even networking on LinkedIn or WhatsApp groups counts. Every small interaction builds your confidence for the next one.

5. Bring a Friend

If you feel nervous going alone, attend events with someone you trust. Having a friend nearby can give you courage and help start conversations. Once you feel more comfortable, you can speak to others on your own.

6. Look for Other Quiet People

Not everyone at an event is confident or outgoing. Some are just as shy as you. Look for someone standing alone or sitting quietly. They may appreciate you starting a simple conversation.

7. Use Simple Body Language

You don’t need to speak loudly or be dramatic. Small things like a smile, eye contact, and a relaxed posture make you seem friendly and open. This makes others feel comfortable approaching you too.

8. Set Small Goals

Instead of trying to meet many people, set an easy goal like “I will talk to two people today” or “I will introduce myself once.” Small wins reduce pressure and make networking feel manageable.

9. Follow Up Afterward

You don’t have to build the whole connection on the spot. After meeting someone briefly, send a message later to thank them or continue the conversation. This can be through WhatsApp, email, or social media.

10. Be Yourself

You don’t need to act like an extrovert to network. Quiet people can make strong, lasting connections because they tend to be thoughtful and genuine. Focus on being polite, curious, and respectful, these traits matter more than being loud.

FINAL MESSAGE

Networking is not about being the most talkative person in the room. It’s about making real connections, one step at a time. With small efforts and simple strategies, even shy, introverted, or overthinking people can succeed at it.
