For the first time on the European continent, in Switzerland, delegates from the AFC/M23 coalition and those from the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo are set to begin talks, with both sides already having arrived in Geneva.
Although the talks are scheduled to start this week, the exact venue remains undisclosed.
This marks the ninth round of negotiations between the two parties. Delegates from AFC/M23 traveled from Goma, as well as from the United States and other locations.
The AFC/M23 delegation is led by Benjamin Mbonimpa, the Secretary-General of AFC/M23. René Abandi remains a key representative in these negotiations.
The delegation from the Government of the DRC is led by Sumbu Sita Mambu, a special envoy of the President of Congo.
An important detail is that representatives from Qatar will not attend the talks in person but will participate virtually through technology.
Meanwhile, representatives from the United States will be physically present. Unlike in Doha, where they acted as observers, this time they will serve as mediators. MONUSCO will participate as an observer. Switzerland, as the host, will play a major role in organizing the talks.
According to Radio France Internationale (RFI), the United States Department of State is leading the organization of these talks. It is also responsible for sending invitations and covering travel logistics for the delegates.
The goal of these talks is to revive negotiations between AFC/M23 and the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, at a time when fighting continues in the eastern part of the DRC.
