The Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) has withdrawn the Standards Mark (S-Mark) certification for beverages produced by 47 alcohol manufacturing companies, several of which had already been shut down and ordered to pull their products from the market.
RSB announced the decision based on Law No. 50/2013 of 28 June 2013, which established the institution and defined its mandate, structure, and operations specifically Article 4(7), which covers the issuing of quality marks and monitoring their use.
The institution said the withdrawal of these certifications was carried out “in order to protect public health and safety,” and that RSB is informing manufacturers, distributors, traders, and the general public accordingly.
As a result, RSB said it has “withdrawn the quality mark (S-Mark) licenses for products from the alcoholic beverage manufacturing companies listed in the annex.”
RSB has also suspended use of the S-Mark on products from these companies, ordering that “manufacturers of these beverages… immediately instruct distributors to recall the products to the factory warehouses and remove them from the market, in accordance with the directives issued by the Rwanda FDA on August 2 and August 3, 2026.”
The institution warned that failure to comply with the announcement will result in further legal and regulatory measures.
