President Paul Kagame has said Africa intends to play an active role in the rapidly expanding space economy, both as a user of space technologies and as a contributor to research, science and global decision-making.
Speaking at the International Space Summit in Paris, Kagame emphasized that the continent must position itself as a significant actor in the sector’s future rather than remain a passive consumer of space capabilities.
The President attributed the transformation of the global space industry to three key drivers. “The space economy is evolving rapidly, driven by lower costs, new technologies, and greater private-sector engagement,” he said.
This evolution creates a critical moment for African nations to engage strategically and establish themselves as participants in shaping the sector’s direction. “Africa intends to be a full participant in this growth, not only as a user of space capabilities, but also as a contributor to science, research, and global decision-making.”
Kagame highlighted the particular relevance of the space sector to Africa’s demographic and economic context.
With a young and increasingly connected population, the continent possesses both the need and potential to benefit from space-based solutions and innovations. “For a continent with a young and increasingly connected population, this sector offers enormous potential.”
He underscored that unlocking this potential requires intentional investment and policy support to build African capacity in the sector.
The President called for concrete mechanisms to enable meaningful African participation. “With the right support, our talent pool can develop the relevant expertise, and build businesses, and create real value for Africa.”
This vision aligns with Rwanda’s positioning as a digital innovation hub and reflects broader African aspirations for technological sovereignty and economic diversification.
