Over 10 million Rwandans in 27 districts had registered for the country’s Digital ID, with their personal details verified as part of the process, according to the National Identification Agency (NIDA).
The exercise reached Rusizi District, where registration started in nine sectors. Residents in the remaining sectors were expected to be served next week.
The latest total was higher than the figure reported in August, when NIDA said more than 8 million people had registered and over 7 million had completed biometric enrollment.
RadioTV10 previously reported that the registration exercise started in the Southern Province before being extended to other parts of the country. NIDA teams have been working district by district as more residents complete the process.
Registration includes checking personal details and collecting information required for the new ID. NIDA says this can include a facial image, fingerprints and iris scans, depending on a person’s age.
The Digital ID is expected to give residents another way to prove their identity when accessing government and private-sector services, without relying only on the physical national ID card.
NIDA had earlier set a target of registering more than 14 million people as the programme expanded across the country.
