Rwanda Works Towards Hosting Formula One African Grand Prix in Early 2030s

Rwanda is working towards hosting a Formula One African Grand Prix in the early 2030s, according to President Paul Kagame.

Speaking about the country’s plans, Kagame said: “I am very happy to announce that Rwanda has been working very hard towards hosting the African Grand Prix in the early 2030s.”

The statement highlights Rwanda’s efforts to bring Formula One racing to the country and return the competition to the African continent. Formula One is one of the world’s leading motorsport competitions, attracting international drivers, teams, sponsors and millions of fans.

If successful, hosting the Grand Prix could create opportunities for Rwanda’s tourism sector, hotels, transport companies and other local businesses. The event could also attract international visitors and increase the country’s visibility among global sports audiences.

Formula 1 has announced: “Africa, we’re coming back! From the early 2030s, the African Grand Prix will be added to the Formula 1 racing calendar, with the race set to take place in Bugesera, Rwanda.”

In December 2024, President Paul Kagame confirmed that the Rwandan government had begun discussions with Formula 1 organisers to bring the prestigious motor racing competition, known as the Formula 1 Grand Prix, to Rwanda. He made the announcement while officially opening the FIA General Assembly in Kigali.

The Head of State also said that encouraging progress had been made in the discussions, raising hopes that Rwanda would host the globally popular racing event.

Last week, motorsport news website RacingNews365 reported that an agreement to bring Formula 1 to Rwanda had reportedly been reached, with an official announcement expected soon.

The African Grand Prix is expected to take place in Rwanda in the early 2030s. It would mark the return of Formula 1 to Africa for the first time since 1993, when the South African Grand Prix was held at the Kyalami circuit.
