The number of known elephants living in Akagera Park has reached 115, following a survey conducted with the aim of identifying and tracking each elephant in the park.
The management of Akagera Park announced that the survey, which is conducted twice a month, resulted in the identification of six additional elephants beyond those already known, bringing the total number of these animals to 115.
Among these 115 elephants are 65 females and 50 males. This figure represents approximately 80% of the total estimated number of elephants in Akagera Park.
Individual elephant identification update: “The bi-monthly elephant survey was completed, resulting in the addition of six new individuals to the database. Akagera now has 115 individually identified elephants, comprising 65 females and 50 males, representing approximately 80% of the estimated park’s population.”
This survey is conducted in order to monitor trends in the elephant population, identify each individual elephant, and help those responsible for biodiversity conservation make decisions based on accurate data.
Akagera Park is one of the important protected areas in Rwanda, home to various species of animals including large mammals. It is managed in partnership between the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and the international park conservation organization, African Parks.
Knowing the exact number of elephants and their characteristics helps to better protect these animals and plan conservation strategies for their habitat, so that they continue to contribute to tourism and environmental conservation in Rwanda.
