Burundi’s President Ndayishimiye receives Tshisekedi’s Special Envoy with a message

Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye, who recently received a group of opposition leaders from the Democratic Republic of Congo, has now received an envoy sent by President Félix Tshisekedi carrying a message addressed to him.

On Wednesday, July 15, 2026, President Evariste Ndayishimiye, who also currently chairs the African Union, received the envoy from President Tshisekedi.

As announced by the Office of the President of Burundi: “On Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the Presidential Palace in Gitega, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi and Chairperson of the African Union, received Floribert Anzuluni Isiloketshi, Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as Special Envoy of His Excellency Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who brought him a message.”

The Burundian Presidency also announced that discussions between Ndayishimiye and the special envoy sent by Tshisekedi focused on the security situation in eastern DRC and on strengthening relations between Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

President Tshisekedi sent this envoy to Ndayishimiye just one week after President Ndayishimiye held discussions with members of the C64 coalition, a group that includes leaders of major religious institutions and opposition political party leaders in the DRC.

During those discussions, the President of Burundi had urged the group, which opposes Tshisekedi’s plan to change the constitution, to embrace the path of dialogue.

Less than a month ago, President Évariste Ndayishimiye also made an official working visit to Kinshasa, where he once again emphasized the need to find solutions to the security challenges, particularly in eastern DRC.

Burundi, which maintains military cooperation with the DRC, has deployed a significant number of soldiers to the eastern part of the country. Since 2022, it is reported to have sent up to 30,000 troops there to join the FARDC in confronting the AFC/M23 coalition that is fighting against Tshisekedi’s government.
