Location plays a vital role in business success or failure

Two people can open the same type of business, sell similar products and charge almost the same prices, but one can attract many customers while the other struggles. One important difference may be location.

Where a business is located can have a major effect on how easily customers find it and how often they visit. This is why choosing a location should be one of the important decisions an entrepreneur makes before opening a business.

A business that depends on people passing by, such as a restaurant, salon, shop or coffee business, may need to be in a place with enough foot traffic. Being close to offices, schools, markets, bus stops or residential areas can help a business reach more potential customer.

However, a busy location does not automatically guarantee success. The business also needs to understand the people living or working in that area. For example, a business selling expensive products may struggle in an area where most customers are looking for cheaper options.

Rent is another important factor. A location in a very busy area may attract many customers, but the rent may also be high. If the business cannot make enough money to cover its costs, the location can become a problem instead of an advantage.

Accessibility also matters. Customers may avoid a business if it is difficult to reach, has no parking, is hidden from the main road or is difficult to find. Even a good business can lose customers when visiting it becomes inconvenient.

Competition should also be considered. Being close to other businesses can sometimes be helpful because customers already know the area as a place to shop. However, too many businesses offering exactly the same products can make it harder for a new business to stand out.

Entrepreneurs should therefore study a location before committing to it. They can observe how many people pass through the area, identify the type of customers nearby, look at competing businesses and compare the expected sales with the cost of rent and other expenses.

A good product is important, but customers must also be able to find and access it.

Before opening a business, entrepreneurs should not only ask, “What am I going to sell?” They should also ask, “Who will buy it, and where can I easily reach them?”

Sometimes, the difference between a business that struggles and one that grows can simply be where it is located.
