MTN Rwandacell PLC (MTN Rwanda) announced a significant milestone in its ongoing network modernization programme, reinforcing the company’s commitment to enhancing connectivity, improving customer experience, increasing network capacity, and supporting Rwanda’s digital transformation agenda.
As Rwanda continues to accelerate its digital journey, reliable, high-quality connectivity is
becoming increasingly important to how individuals, businesses and communities communicate,
transact, access services and participate in the digital economy. Through continued investments
in its network infrastructure, MTN Rwanda is building a more resilient, efficient and future-ready
network designed to meet the evolving needs of customers.
One of the latest enhancements enabled through these investments is Voice over LTE (VoLTE),
a technology that allows customers to make and receive voice calls over the 4G network.
Customers with compatible devices will benefit from HD voice quality, faster call connection
times, and the ability to continue using 4G data services while on a call, creating a more
seamless communications experience.
Speaking at the press conference, Elijah Iragaba, Chief Technology Officer at MTN Rwanda,
said:
“At MTN Rwanda, we are continuously investing in our network to ensure customers enjoy a
world-class connectivity experience. As Rwanda advances towards a more digitally connected
future, modern, resilient and high-capacity networks are essential to supporting the growing
demand for digital services. Our network modernization programme is designed to enhance
customer experiences today while building a strong foundation for the technologies and services
of tomorrow.”
He added:
“The enhancements we are introducing are about more than technology. They are about
enabling people to communicate more effectively, helping businesses operate more efficiently,
and ensuring that customers can fully participate in Rwanda's growing digital economy. As
connectivity continues to evolve, we remain committed to investing in infrastructure that delivers
meaningful benefits to our customers and the country.”
These investments are also expanding access to next-generation connectivity across Rwanda.
MTN Rwanda has continued to extend its 5G footprint across multiple areas of Kigali and
recently expanded coverage to Musanze, one of Rwanda's leading tourism and business hubs.
Together with ongoing upgrades to the 4G network, these investments are helping to provide
faster, more reliable connectivity that supports innovation, enterprise growth, tourism, and digital
inclusion.
These improvements are particularly relevant as digital services become increasingly integrated
into everyday life. From mobile financial services and e-commerce to online learning, remote working and access to government services, reliable connectivity plays a critical role in supporting digital inclusion and economic participation.
The enhanced calling experience is currently available to customers using compatible iPhone
devices and the latest Samsung Galaxy S series models. Certification processes are also
underway for additional Samsung models and Transsion brands, including Tecno, Itel and Infinix,
which will enable more customers to benefit from VoLTE services in the coming months.
As Rwanda continues to implement its national digital transformation ambitions, robust
telecommunications infrastructure remains a critical enabler of economic growth, innovation and
digital inclusion. Through continued investments in network modernization, including the
expansion of 5G coverage, enhancement of 4G capabilities and the introduction of advanced
technologies such as VoLTE, MTN Rwanda is strengthening the digital foundations that connect
people, businesses and communities across the country.
