The State of Qatar welcomed the joint decision by the Kingdom of Belgium and the Republic of Rwanda to resume diplomatic relations and reopen their respective embassies saying the move reflects both countries’ commitment to overcoming differences through dialogue and mutual understanding.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Doha hosted the first meeting between the foreign ministers of Rwanda and Belgium in June 2025 as part of efforts to bring the two sides closer together.
“The meeting opened the door to direct dialogue and paved the way for subsequent meetings and communications that led to the resumption of diplomatic relations.”
Rwanda and Belgium also acknowledged Qatar’s role when they announced the restoration of diplomatic relations. In their joint statement the two countries thanked Qatar for facilitating the first meeting between Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe and Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot in Doha.
The meeting was followed by further contacts between the two ministers as both sides worked to address differences and misunderstandings that had strained relations.
Rwanda and Belgium later agreed to restore diplomatic relations and reopen their respective embassies after 18 months of severed ties.
Qatar said it appreciated the recognition of its role in helping the two countries resume dialogue.
The ministry praised Rwanda and Belgium for the approach they took in addressing their differences and clearing up misunderstandings.
Qatar said it hopes the restoration of diplomatic relations will open new opportunities for cooperation between Rwanda and Belgium and contribute to peace and stability at regional and international levels.
The ministry reaffirmed Qatar’s support for resolving disputes through dialogue and peaceful diplomatic means.
