REG Women’s Basketball Club defeated APR 84-77 to win its first regional title, with both Rwandan teams securing places in the 2026 Women’s Basketball League Africa championship in Egypt.
The final took place at the Filbert Bayi Olympafrica Centre in Kibaha, Tanzania, on October 24, bringing together two Rwandan clubs that had already secured qualification for the continental competition.
REG, coached by Cheikh Sarr, claimed the regional championship after finishing as runners-up to APR in the previous year’s tournament.
The match began with REG taking an early lead, although APR fought back to reduce the gap to just two points by the end of the first quarter, which finished 22-20.
REG strengthened its advantage in the second quarter, outscoring APR 23-9 to establish a 45-29 lead at halftime.
APR responded in the third quarter, narrowing the gap to 65–55 before continuing its comeback attempt in the final period. However, REG maintained its lead to secure a seven-point victory.
Kayana Traylor led REG’s scoring with 25 points, while Delicia Washington contributed 18 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Destiney Philoxy added 16 points, while Kristina King and Kadidia Maiga contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
REG completed the qualifying tournament unbeaten, winning all six of its matches, while APR finished second with five victories and one defeat.
The result marked a reversal of the 2025 final, when APR defeated REG to claim the regional championship.
Both Rwandan clubs will now represent the region at the Women’s Basketball League Africa championship, scheduled to take place in Cairo, Egypt, from December 11 to 20.
REG will enter the continental competition as regional champions, while APR will seek to build on its previous achievements, having secured bronze medals in the last two editions of the tournament.
