Rwanda and Togo have signed three agreements aimed at strengthening political dialogue and expanding cooperation between the two countries.
The agreements were signed in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly following a bilateral meeting between Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, and Togo’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, African Integration and Togolese Abroad, Prof. Robert Dussey.
They include a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations, a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a Joint Commission for Cooperation, and a Framework Agreement for Cooperation.
The latest agreements come after a series of diplomatic and economic engagements between Rwanda and Togo during 2026.
In January, Nduhungirehe and Dussey signed a reciprocal visa-waiver agreement in Lomé covering holders of all categories of passports. The agreement was aimed at facilitating movement and strengthening economic and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
Cooperation has also extended to trade and investment. In May, Rwanda’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Prudence Sebahizi, met Togo’s President of the Council, Faure Gnassingbé, during the Biashara Africa forum in Lomé.
According to the Togolese Presidency, their discussions explored opportunities for cooperation in trade and business, including value addition and the export of agricultural products.
President Paul Kagame also travelled to Togo in June for a working visit during the African Air Transport Convention and Exhibition. The Togolese government said his programme included discussions with Gnassingbé on issues of common interest at bilateral and continental levels.
The three agreements signed in New York add to those developments, following the visa-waiver deal, trade and investment discussions and continued high-level engagement between Kigali and Lomé this year.
