The Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) has pulled the plug on imports of 52 spirit brands, several of them familiar names on Rwandan shelves, including Gilbeys Gin, Kiwingu Spirit, and K-Vant, and is telling shops to clear them out immediately while urging anyone still drinking them to stop.
The Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) confirmed the move in a public announcement, framing it squarely as a public-health measure: “In the interest of public health, Rwanda FDA informs all importers, distributors, retailers and the general public that importation of alcoholic beverages listed in Annex I is temporarily suspended with immediate effect.”
Under the order, importers must launch a full recall right away, pull stock back from their distributors, and file a recall report within three working days. Distributors and retailers, for their part, have to stop selling the products immediately and return whatever they have left to the importers. The FDA didn’t mince words about the consequences of ignoring any of this: “Non-compliance with all the above will result in measures under applicable regulatory provisions.”
Consumers haven’t been left out either, the regulator is telling people to simply stop drinking the affected brands, and every ad or promotional display for them has to come down nationwide, effective immediately.
The 52 brands span six countries, Burundi, India, Kenya, Poland, Tanzania, and Uganda, and the FDA has signaled this may not be the end of it, noting that further products could be added to the list as its review continues.
