Rwanda opened its first embassy in Spain after Ambassador Christine Nkulikiyinka presented copies of her letters of credence to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation in Madrid.
The embassy said the presentation marked the establishment of Rwanda’s first diplomatic mission to the Kingdom of Spain.
Nkulikiyinka was appointed Rwanda’s ambassador to Spain in June as part of changes to the government and diplomatic service.
Rwanda and Spain have maintained diplomatic relations since 1967. Before the embassy was established in Madrid, Rwanda handled its diplomatic affairs with Spain through its embassy in Paris, France.
Spain is represented in Rwanda through its embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The two countries have increased diplomatic engagement in recent years. During bilateral talks held in Kigali in 2025, their officials explored cooperation in trade and investment, health, agriculture and infrastructure.
Trade between the two countries has also grown, with Rwanda exporting products including coffee, avocados and coconut oil to Spain.
The new embassy gives Rwanda a permanent diplomatic presence in Spain for the first time since the two countries established relations.
