Rwanda has welcomed its 24th group of asylum seekers evacuated from Libya, continuing its partnership with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) under the Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM), the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management announced on Wednesday.
According to a statement shared by the Ministry, the latest group comprises 177 asylum seekers from Sudan (68), Eritrea (66), South Sudan (26), Ethiopia (15), and Somalia (2). They arrived in Kigali and have been transferred to the Gashora Transit Center in Bugesera District, where they will be temporarily accommodated alongside other evacuees awaiting resettlement.
The Ministry said Rwanda has received more than 3,000 refugees and asylum seekers evacuated from Libya since the ETM was launched in September 2019 in partnership with UNHCR. Of those, 2,681 have been successfully resettled in third countries.
Canada has received the largest number of evacuees, resettling 927 people, followed by France (332), the United States (325), Sweden (297), Finland (271), Norway (229), Germany (132), the Netherlands (94), and Belgium (72).
The Ministry reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to supporting international humanitarian efforts, stating that the country “remains committed to offering refuge to people in need.
