Rwandans are showing growing interest in capital market investment as more people become familiar with opportunities to invest in shares and bonds, with approximately 300,000 investment accounts opened, according to a Rwanda Stock Exchange (RSE) official.
David Mitari, an operations official at the RSE, said public understanding of the market has improved considerably over the past three years, encouraging more Rwandans to explore investment opportunities previously associated mainly with foreign investors and wealthy individuals.
Mitari made the remarks during the Capital Markets Roadshows 2026 campaign in Rubavu District on Wednesday, October 28.
He explained that the increasing involvement of local investors reflects a change in attitudes towards the stock market, as more Rwandans recognise its potential as a way to invest their savings.
Mitari said foreign investors previously dominated the market, but Rwandans have since expanded their participation and are opening investment accounts in greater numbers.
The development comes as capital market institutions intensify efforts to help the public understand how investment products work and how individuals can participate.
The Capital Markets Authority (CMA), which organised the roadshow in partnership with the Private Sector Federation (PSF), RSE and other market participants, is using the campaign to introduce business communities to investment and financing opportunities.
Participants are learning about shares, which give investors ownership stakes in companies, and bonds, which allow governments and businesses to raise funds from investors under agreed repayment terms.
Earlier in October, the RSE and CMA also organised investor education activities during World Investor Week, encouraging people to understand investment opportunities, assess risks and seek information from licensed financial service providers.
At the Rubavu event, Western Province Governor Jean Bosco Ntibitura encouraged business owners to explore investment opportunities beyond their existing commercial activities.
He said engagement with capital market professionals could help entrepreneurs understand how to make better use of their financial resources and identify additional ways to invest.
The campaign also aims to help businesses understand how they can access long-term financing through capital market instruments, including issuing shares and corporate bonds.
The nationwide roadshows began on October 27 and are scheduled to continue in different districts before concluding in Kigali on November 25.
