The amount of money you spend every month is not only affected by how much you earn. Where you live can also play a big role in your daily expenses. Two people earning the same salary may have very different financial lives simply because they live in different areas.
In Rwanda, the cost of living can vary depending on the location. Living in a busy and developed area can mean paying more for rent, transport, food, entertainment and other services. For example, someone living closer to Kigali’s main business areas may spend more on housing than someone living farther from the city centre.
Transport is another major expense. People who live far from their workplace may spend more money travelling every day. Even when the cost of one trip seems small, the amount can become significant when it is paid every day for an entire month. Someone who lives closer to work may be able to walk, use less transport or spend less on daily commuting.
Food costs can also differ depending on where a person shops and eats. People living in areas with many restaurants, supermarkets and cafés may be tempted to spend more on prepared food. In other areas, residents may have easier access to local markets where they can buy food at lower prices and prepare meals at home.
Entertainment and social life can also affect spending. Living in an area with many cafés, restaurants, shopping centres and other activities can make it easier to spend money regularly, especially when meeting friends.
However, living in a more expensive area does not automatically mean someone will struggle financially. Personal habits still matter. A person can live in an expensive neighbourhood and carefully control their spending, while someone living in a cheaper area can still spend more because of their lifestyle.
This is why choosing where to live should not only be about convenience or appearance. It is also important to consider how the location will affect your monthly budget. Before moving to a new area, people can look at rent, transport, food, utilities and other regular expenses.
Sometimes, choosing a home that is slightly farther away but affordable and well connected to work can help reduce monthly expenses. The goal is not always to live in the cheapest place, but to find a location that matches your income, needs and lifestyle.
