The AFC/M23 coalition has stated that the opposing side, made up of FARDC, FDLR, and Burundian troops, launched attacks in several areas using heavy weapons.
This was announced by the political spokesperson of AFC/M23, Lawrence Kanyuka, on the morning of Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
In his statement describing the situation that morning, Kanyuka said that “Since the early hours of this Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the coalition of Kinshasa regime forces, including the FARDC, FDLR, Wazalendo militias, mercenaries, as well as the Burundian National Defense Force, has launched widespread and coordinated attacks across all front lines.”
Kanyuka added that these attacks were carried out in densely populated civilian areas, where the opposing forces used heavy weapons and combat drones.
The AFC/M23 spokesperson stated that “in Minembwe, the coalition has violently targeted the villages of Rugezi, Kalingi, Gakenke, and Bidegu. At this hour, the bombardments continue relentlessly exposing civilian populations to extreme danger.”
In Kalehe, FARDC and its allies reportedly launched attacks in the Lubimbishi area and surrounding locations. In Lubero territory, attacks were reported in Kabesebese and Mutondi.
Kanyuka said, “In the face of this large-scale new offensive, the AFC/M23 condemns in the strongest possible terms the irresponsible decision of the Kinshasa regime to abandon the peace process in favor of a warlike option.” He added that this decision puts at risk the ongoing efforts aimed at resolving the conflict through peaceful means.
