The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has announced a reduction in gorilla trekking permit fees for the entire year of 2026, as part of efforts to promote domestic and regional tourism.
Under the new pricing structure, Rwandans and citizens of East African Community (EAC) member states will pay USD 200 for a gorilla trekking permit. Visitors in this category will only be required to present a national ID, passport, or birth certificate.
African nationals and foreign residents living in Africa will pay USD 500. They are required to present a passport, proof of residence, diplomatic ID, or a valid visa of at least four consecutive months.
According to RDB, this price reduction aims to encourage Rwandans and regional travelers to visit one of the most iconic tourist attractions in the region, Volcanoes National Park.
Volcanoes National Park is the only place in the world that is home to the endangered mountain gorillas.
The increase in gorilla trekking permit fees in Rwanda began between 2017 and 2019, when prices rose from USD 750 to USD 1,500 for international visitors.
From 2020 to date, the gorilla trekking permit fee for international tourists has remained unchanged at USD 1,500. What has varied over the years are temporary discounted rates introduced for Rwandans, East Africans, and African residents, including the USD 200 promotional rate for locals and regional visitors and USD 500 for foreign residents living in Rwanda or elsewhere in Africa.
These promotional rates have mainly been applied during specific periods, particularly as part of post–COVID-19 tourism recovery initiatives.
RDB clarified that the discounted rates will be applicable throughout 2026, except during the high tourism season (June to October), when standard rates will apply.
