The Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) has announced that it has suspended and revoked all licenses for importing ethanol (Neutral Spirit) into the country, in the interest of public health.
The move, outlined in a public announcement issued by Rwanda FDA, states that the decision is aimed at protecting public health.
Ethanol (Neutral Spirit) has often been linked to substandard alcoholic drinks that have, in recent days, claimed lives and left others with permanent disabilities, including blindness.
The announcement reads: “In the interest of public health, Rwanda FDA informs all manufacturers, importers, retailers and the general public that: All Import Licenses for Neutral Spirit (Ethanol) issued by Rwanda FDA are hereby revoked. All pending applications for importation of Neutral Spirit (Ethanol) are suspended until further notice.”
It adds: “Rwanda FDA appreciates your understanding and cooperation.”
Rwanda has, in recent days, seen a wave of sudden deaths linked to substandard alcoholic drinks, commonly referred to as “ibyuma,” or compared to “Kanyanga.”
Some of these drinks are reportedly made using ethanol, which, once it enters the body, is said to damage internal organs and can reach the brain, leaving some who survive with permanent disabilities such as blindness.
