Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, has signed the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG).
The signing took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, making Rwanda the ninth country to sign the convention, reflecting its commitment to continuing to combat gender-based violence across the African continent.
The AU convention establishes a comprehensive continental legal framework aimed at preventing, protecting against and responding to all forms of violence against women and girls. It includes measures to strengthen laws, support survivors, and put in place robust mechanisms for monitoring and holding perpetrators accountable.
In Addis Ababa, Minister Nduhungirehe signed the AU convention on ending violence against women and girls, making Rwanda the 9th signatory country. “The convention provides a comprehensive continental legal framework to prevent and respond to all forms of violence against women and girls. Rwanda supports the convention as it aligns with Rwanda’s vision and National gender policy.”
Rwanda noted that it supports the convention because it aligns with its vision of building a country that prioritizes gender equality and complementarity between men and women, as well as the principles enshrined in its National Gender Policy.
This development adds to other existing measures Rwanda already has in place to protect the rights of women and girls and build a stable and inclusive society.
