The Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) has confirmed that a new vehicle emission testing program will officially begin on August 25, 2025, targeting all categories of vehicles, including motorcycles.
The initiative, according to REMA, is part of efforts to reduce air pollution and safeguard public health.
In a statement released on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the authority announced that, “enhanced vehicle emission testing will officially start on August 25, 2025, as part of the ongoing #CleanAir Campaign.”
The program will apply to all petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles and they are required to undergo emission testing.
REMA further explained the procedure for vehicle owners, saying: “Vehicle owners will book an appointment through the Irembo platform as usual, and will pay for the mechanical and emission testing separately.”
The institution also urged owners to prepare their vehicles in advance to ensure compliance and contribute to cleaner, healthier ai for all.
The new emission test will cover motorcycles, passenger vehicles, cargo trucks, buses, and other motorized machinery. The charges are as follows:
