The Government of the United States of America has released a joint statement with the Governments of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), outlining the outcomes of two days of talks in which the countries agreed on concrete steps to advance the implementation of the Washington Peace Agreement.
The statement, issued by the Office of the Spokesperson of the U.S. Department of State, indicates that the discussions held on March 17–18, 2026, focused on implementing the Washington Peace Agreement under the Washington Accords for Peace and Prosperity.
According to the joint statement “On March 17-18, 2026, representatives from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda met in Washington, D.C. and agreed to concrete steps to further implementation of the Washington Peace Agreement under the Washington Accords for Peace and Prosperity.”
Rwanda and the DRC also agreed on a series of coordinated actions aimed at de-escalating tensions on the ground.
Among the agreed measures are mutual commitments to respect and support each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as a planned timeline for the disengagement of forces and the lifting of defensive measures by Rwanda in specified areas within DRC territory.
Additionally, the DRC committed to intensifying and time-bound efforts to neutralize the FDLR armed group, while ensuring the protection of all civilians without discrimination.
The U.S. State Department further noted that both Rwanda and the DRC reaffirmed their commitment to achieving lasting peace and prosperity in the region.
