Once considered a forgotten and underdeveloped place, the hills of Kibali, in Rwanda’s Gicumbi District, are now a symbol of transformation and hope. For the past 18 years, the Anglican Church of Rwanda – Diocese of Byumba, in partnership with churches from Colorado Springs, USA, has worked tirelessly to uplift this rural community.
It all began with a vision — not just to preach, but to build. Under the leadership of Bishop Emmanuel Ngendahayo, the church emphasized that prayer must be matched with action. “Faith without work is dead,” the Bishop often reminds his congregation, echoing the belief that true spirituality must walk hand in hand with development.
Over the years, the church in Partnership with Colorado Springs, USA have constructed a health post, a multipurpose hall, and a school — the latter still growing with each passing season. Vulnerable families have received homes, livestock, and health insurance, transforming lives one household at a time.
Each July, across the globe, Anglicans from Rwanda and Colorado Springs lace up their running shoes for the “Run With Rwanda” campaign — a synchronized run to raise awareness about non-communicable diseases and to generate funds for Kibali’s development. What began as a symbolic act has become a lifeline, with Americans raising money to support health and welfare projects thousands of miles away.
People like Pastor Aaron Buttery, from Colorado Springs, call this partnership a mission of love. “We’re not just giving; we are growing together with the people of Kibali,” he says.
Even local leaders like Theoneste Ngezahumuremyi, Executive Secretary of Byumba Sector, have taken notice. He praises the church’s effort in reducing extreme poverty and urges other religious groups to follow suit.
Looking ahead, there are plans to construct a modern football pitch, providing the youth a space not just for play but for dreams to flourish.
From a struggling hilltop village to a growing hub of hope and opportunity, Kibali’s story proves what can happen when faith, love, and action come together.
