Kigali, 5th December 2024: Airtel Money has redefined interoperability in Rwanda by making cross-network money transfers more seamless than ever before, while rewarding users with free bundles on every transfer made above Rwf 1,000. This upgrade eliminates the hassle of prior opt-ins or complex steps, setting a new standard for simplicity and efficiency in mobile payments.

The new marketing campaign entitled WAMENYE WAGUAN?! Has been designed to create awareness about the ease of sending money across all networks in Rwanda.

How It Works:

  • Dial *1821*1*2#
  • Enter the recipient’s mobile number (other networks)
  • Input the amount, confirm with your PIN, and send instantly!

*182*1*2*MoMo number*Amount#

For even greater convenience, the service is also available on the My Airtel App.

Building on a Foundation of Interoperability

While interoperability between mobile networks is not new in Rwanda, Airtel Money’s latest upgrade ensures that transactions are faster, simpler, and more user-friendly than ever. This enhanced experience addresses previous challenges, such as requiring both parties to accept terms and conditions, which often frustrated users.

Jean Claude Gaga, Managing Director of Airtel Money, shared his thoughts on this significant improvement: “The biggest pain point for users of this service was the steps of terms and conditions which was unnecessary. So we championed that our partner service providers adhere to a single process to allow for a better experience. This came through end of September and we saw an immediate growth of 21% in value exchanged the following month. Starting today for every transfer a customer on AM will make to other networks we shall reward them with a data or voice bundle. No conditions whatsoever.”

The Role of RSwitch: Connecting Rwanda’s Financial Ecosystem

This revamp wouldn’t have been possible without RSwitch, Rwanda’s National Payment Switch, which facilitates secure and efficient interoperability across telecoms, banks, and financial institutions. RSwitch’s infrastructure ensures a unified financial ecosystem, making digital financial services accessible to everyone.

Blaise Pascal Gasabira, CEO of RSwitch, highlighted the importance of this collaboration: “Revamping interoperability via eKash is a critical step in advancing financial inclusion in Rwanda. RSwitch is proud to work with Airtel Money and other partners to ensure seamless, secure, and inclusive digital transactions that benefit every Rwandan. Together, we’re making the future of payments more efficient and accessible.”

What’s in it for Customers?

  • Instant, Effortless Transactions: Send money instantly across networks without additional steps.
  • Free Bundles: Receive a free bundle for every transaction above 1,000 francs. Smartphone users will get a data bundle while feature phone users get voice bundles.

A New Era of Simplicity and Value

This enhanced interoperability eliminates past complexities and ensures that every transaction is not only seamless but also rewarding. Airtel Money is committed to continuously improving the mobile financial experience and contributing to a more inclusive digital economy. Switch to Airtel Money today and enjoy seamless cross-network transactions—simple, secure, and rewarding!
