The leadership of Mount Kigali University has called on students and staff across its affiliated institutions to stand firmly against genocide denial and revisionism related to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

On Friday, students, lecturers, university leaders, and employees from institutions within the Mount Kigali University ecosystem, including Kigali Paramount Hotel, Royal FM, and University Medical Center, gathered to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi.

The commemoration activities began at around 11:00 a.m. with a visit to the Nyanza Genocide Memorial located in Kicukiro District. During the visit, participants paid tribute to more than 105,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi laid to rest at the memorial site.

Students who attended the memorial said that witnessing the evidence and learning more about the history of the genocide strengthened their commitment to fighting divisionism and genocide ideology.

One of the students, Ntwali Phillippe, emphasized the importance of unity among Rwandans and encouraging young people to learn the country’s history.

he said. “We have seen clear evidence that the genocide happened. We will encourage our fellow students to visit memorial sites and learn this history. We must reject divisionism and remember that we are all Rwandans,”

Speaking during the commemoration, Dr. John Nyirigira, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Mount Kigali University in charge of Administration and Finance, urged students and staff to use their knowledge and platforms, especially social media, to confront those who deny Genocide against the Tutsi.

“We have young people who actively use social media, and we encourage them to fight against genocide denial and minimization. Our Lecturers also have the responsibility to teach the truth and ensure that future generations understand the real history of the Genocide against the Tutsi,”

Following the visit to the memorial, participants proceeded to the university’s headquarters in Kicukiro, where they continued the commemoration activities by lighting the Flame of Hope .

Mount Kigali University officials noted that participating in commemoration activities has become part of the institution’s commitment to educating students about Rwanda’s history and promoting values of unity and reconciliation.

The university administration further explained that exposing students to historical evidence and memorial sites helps equip them with the knowledge needed to share the truth about Rwanda’s history and contribute to ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again.
