The AFC/M23 coalition, which opposes the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is reportedly strengthening its presence in the Mpety area, located in Walikale Territory of North Kivu Province.
Reports indicate that the coalition has increased the number of its fighters and weapons in this area, specifically in the Banakindi locality of Kisimba Groupement, Walikale Territory, North Kivu.
According to information published by ACTUALITE.CD, local sources from the Kalembe area confirmed that three trucks were seen heading toward Mpety, which is located about 18 kilometers from the town of Pinga.
The reports state that the trucks were carrying armed fighters and ammunition. They reportedly departed from Kalembe on Wednesday of this week, January 7, 2025, and later returned empty.
The Secretary of Kisimba Groupement, Lavie Changwi, confirmed the information as reported by the media outlet, stating that fighters from the coalition may have been preparing to respond to possible attacks originating from the town of Pinga.
This reinforcement by AFC/M23 comes just one week after clashes between fighters of the coalition and the Congolese army (FARDC), alongside Wazalendo forces, in the Mahanga area, located near Mpety.
