Ericsson and MTN Rwanda modernize and expand network in Kigali

  • The modernization and expansion partnership is expected to boost user experiences in Kigali, Rwanda and contribute to social and economic progress.
  • The network modernization will also contribute to MTN’s Road to Zero ambition by reducing site footprint and energy consumption.

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and MTN have completed the expansion and modernization of MTN’s network in Kigali, Rwanda to extend network coverage, enhance user experience in the country and prepare the network for the introduction of 5G.

With the expansion and modernization, communities in the country will benefit from boosted connectivity and digitization, better access to education and healthcare, and more while also supporting climate action and energy efficiency. These benefits will foster stronger social connections, stimulate economic development, and empower communities, ultimately contributing to Rwanda’s social economic, and environmental progress.

Mapula Bodibe, MTN Rwanda Chief Executive Officer, commented “Our commitment to ensuring that every Rwandan experiences the benefits of a modern, connected life is at the core of this partnership with Ericsson. With Kigali’s network now fully modernized, we’re making bold strides toward a sustainable, digital future for Rwanda. This initiative not only strengthens our network infrastructure but also aligns with our ambition to drive digital and financial inclusion for all, ultimately contributing to Rwanda’s economic and social development.”

As part of this network modernization and expansion project, MTN Rwanda has introduced energy-efficient multi-band and multi-sector radios from Ericsson Radio System portfolio. These radios are contributing to an optimization in site footprint, reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. By leveraging Ericsson’s latest and most advanced sustainable technologies and network optimization solutions, MTN Rwanda is demonstrating decisive action to address global climate imperatives in line with MTN’s Road to Zero ambition.

Eugen Gakwerere, MTN Rwanda Acting Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, explained, “The modernization project brings important improvements to MTN Rwanda’s network, expanding coverage to underserved areas, increasing network capacity to support more users without congestion, and providing faster data speeds for a smoother digital experience. Additionally, energy-efficient technologies have been integrated to reduce environmental impact, aligning with MTN’s ‘Road to Zero’ commitment for a sustainable future in Rwanda.”

Hossam Kandeel, Vice President and Head of Global Customer Unit MTN and Customer Unit MTN Africa at Ericsson Middle East and Africa, says: “Ericsson is committed to supporting MTN Rwanda in connecting the lives of Rwandans. The modernization will enhance user experiences and expand the connectivity of the nation. Our partnership with MTN Rwanda is a steppingstone to driving digital and financial inclusion in the country in line with our #AfricaInMotion vision to empower a sustainable and connected Africa.”

The partnership between MTN Rwanda and Ericsson signifies a major step towards enhancing Rwanda’s digital infrastructure, aligning with MTN Rwanda’s goals of delivering seamless connectivity and meeting the growing demand for advanced digital services across the country.
