MTN Rwandacell PLC, (MTN Rwanda) hosts its second annual “Dinner in the Dark” event in collaboration with the Rwanda Union of the Blind (RUB), a partnership aligned with MTN Rwanda’s Twese Initiative, emphasizing the commitment to leaving no one behind.

The Twese (“All of Us”) initiative, initiated in 2021, is dedicated to enhancing the accessibility of our products and services for individuals with diverse abilities. Key interventions to date comprise of the provision of Mobile Money kiosks and starting capital for 60 differently abled agents, the implementation of a video call option in our call center catering to customers with hearing impairment, the integration of sign language interpretation in all TV commercials, and a commitment to allocating a minimum of 10% of Graduate Program seats for individuals with different abilities.

In line with Twese initiative, Dinner in the Dark brings together various stakeholders that include government officials, and personnel from diverse sectors to support the visually impaired community. Through this unique initiative, MTN Rwanda aims to deepen awareness, break down barriers, raise funds for white canes and collectively contribute to building a more inclusive society and positively impact the lives of the differently enabled.

“The immersive experience of the ‘Dinner in the Dark’ last year not only increased awareness about the challenges faced by the visually impaired but also directly contributed to the betterment of their lives. By rallying support for white canes, essential tools for independence and mobility, we are taking tangible steps towards empowering them and enhancing their daily experiences. This initiative reflects our dedication to fostering inclusivity and creating a more supportive environment for everyone in our society”, affirmed MTN Rwanda Chief Executive Officer Mapula Bodibe.

The true essence of Dinner in the Dark lies in the authentic experience of what it feels like to navigate daily life without visual senses. It is a conscious effort to bridge the gap in comprehension and consciousness, fostering a deeper connection and appreciation for their experiences. Through this unique encounter, MTN Rwanda seeks to promote awareness, inclusivity, and a shared commitment to a more understanding and supportive society.

As we celebrate this year’s White Cane Day and in keeping with Article 9 of the UN Convention on the Rights of persons with disabilities (UNCRPD) which requires countries to identify and eliminate obstacles and barriers and ensure that persons with disabilities can access their environment, transportation, and public facilities, the Rwanda Union of the Blind (RUB) wishes to use this time to create more awareness and advocate for accessible spaces that are user friendly for white cane users and  the protection and promotion of the rights of persons with visual impairment. We thank MTN Rwanda for supporting us and for those who pledged to provide white canes that enable independent movement of persons with visual impairment across the country for safety and inclusion,” expressed Dr. Beth Mukarwego Rwanda Union of the Blind Chairperson.

MTN Rwanda appreciates the Rwanda Union of the Blind, sponsors, and everyone who took part in making the ‘Dinner in the Dark’ at Kigali Serena Hotel on the 15th of November such a success.
