Rwanda has received 164 additional refugees evacuated from Libya, bringing the total number of refugees welcomed since 2019 to 2,760. Most of them have already been resettled in third countries.
The refugees arrived on the night of Wednesday, February 25, 2026, according to a statement from the Ministry in charge of Emergency Management.
The Ministry stated that, “In partnership with UNHCR (the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), Rwanda received another group of 164 asylum seekers evacuated from Libya.”
Among the 164 refugees received, the majority are from Sudan (143 people). There are also 19 from Eritrea, one from South Sudan, and one from Ethiopia.
The Ministry of Emergency Management announced that immediately after their arrival from Libya, the asylum seekers were transferred to the designated transit center that accommodates refugees evacuated from that country.
The Ministry further noted that “Since 2019, 2,760 people have been evacuated; over 2,500 have been resettled in third countries..”
Rwanda began receiving refugees evacuated from Libya in 2019 after signing an agreement with UNHCR to host African migrants and asylum seekers who had been living in extremely difficult conditions in Libya.
Senior Rwandan officials, including President Paul Kagame, have repeatedly stated that Rwanda’s decision to welcome these refugees is not because the country has abundant resources, but because it understands the hardship of being a refugee. Rwanda’s own history forced many Rwandans into exile in the past.
